The City of San Bruno started with Reimagining Tanforan – a vision for the future. Now, it’s time to take the next step and understand our collective past, address the needs of today, and set priorities together for our next chapter.

Past

Over the decades, Tanforan has evolved many times to meet the changing needs and desires of San Bruno’s residents. Our community has grown and changed as well.

Present

The retail industry has been in a state of decline for more than ten years. The rise of online shopping, changing consumer preferences and the global pandemic accelerated this trend. Communities face increasing challenges around housing, affordability and economic stability.

What replaces Tanforan must be something for tomorrow. The proposal will retain what we most love and add vitality and vibrancy through new uses that serve the whole community. And we need your help to get there, together.

A robust review process to match the moment

On October 5, 2022, the City of San Bruno received a preliminary planning application for a mix used development comprised of retail, office space and housing. The City’s review will begin with an extensive community listening period to ensure residents are informed and that the City captures and can share their priorities and input throughout the process, which also includes technical review and environmental analysis.
